CELEBRATE YORKSHIRE WEST RIDING DAY

West Riding Day is celebrated on 29th March, the anniversary of the Battle of Towton which was fought during the English Wars of the Roses in 1461.

The Battle took place in the village of Towton in Yorkshire and the victor, the Duke of York, became King Edward IV after displacing Henry VI.

The day was selected by public vote to celebrate the proud heritage of this area.  The flag shows the cross of St George, the historic symbol of England, with the vertical band off centre to the left, in the format adopted by most Scandinavian countries.

This relects Yorkshire's Anglo - Scandinavian heritage. At the centre of the cross is the traditional white rose of Yorkshire shown against a blazing sun, a heraldic combination known as "rose-en-soleil".
