What is Merchant Navy Day?

Merchant Navy Day is a day dedicated to honouring the brave men and women who served in the Merchant Navy, and we at The Flag Shop totally support that! The Merchant Navy consists of the civilian fleet of merchant ships that played a vital role in times of both conflict and peace. To give you some background, (and we know you love that) King George V bestowed the title 'Merchant Navy' after the First World War to acknowledge the exceptional contribution of merchant sailors. During both wars, Britain's merchant fleet was the largest in the world, with a third of all merchant ships registered in Britain, and 200,000 sailors at its helm!

These unsung heroes risked their lives to transport essential goods across dangerous waters during both World Wars. They faced treacherous conditions, evading enemy submarines and enduring relentless attacks. Yet their contribution often went unnoticed or overshadowed by military efforts.

So Merchant Navy Day serves as a reminder of their unwavering commitment and sacrifices made for our nation. It's an opportunity to pay tribute to these courageous individuals who selflessly put themselves in harm's way to keep Britain alive during times of turmoil.

But it’s not just about their bravery in such testing times - Nowadays Merchant seafarers are responsible for more than 90% of the UK’s imports! Yet many of us are unaware of this, so it’s important their efforts are properly highlighted.

It took a long time for this tribute day to finally become confirmed, only being made an official day of remembrance on September 3rd 2000 after years of lobbying for its establishment. Now on this day annually we raise the Red Ensign flag - the official flag of the Merchant Navy - all across the United Kingdom. This symbolic gesture honours those who sailed under this proud banner throughout history.

So mark your calendars and join us in commemorating Merchant Navy Day! Let us remember those who braved stormy seas so that we may enjoy everyday conveniences like food and fuel today. Their legacy lives on through this annual celebration that brings awareness to their heroic deeds amidst turbulent times at sea.

Why do we celebrate Merchant Navy Day?

Merchant Navy Day is a significant occasion that holds great importance in the hearts of many. But why do we celebrate it? The first part of the answer lies in wanting to honour the brave men and women who made countless sacrifices to keep Britain alive and functioning during both World Wars. Celebrating Merchant Navy Day allows us to pay tribute to their courage, resilience, and selflessness. It gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude for their unwavering commitment to keeping the nation going during times of immense adversity.

But this day also serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by modern-day seafarers. They continue to carry out the crucial task of transporting goods that are integral to our daily lives – from food and fuel, to clothing and electronics. The term ‘Sea blindness’ has been coined to refer to the widespread public ignorance about the UK’s ongoing dependence on seafarers’ efforts. By acknowledging Merchant Navy Day, we acknowledge these individuals' dedication and devotion. We recognise their often overlooked sacrifices and ensure that they receive the recognition they deserve!
