SUSSEX DAY IS CELEBRATED ON THE 16TH JUNE EACH YEAR and recognises the county's rich heritage and culture.

16th June is also St Richard's Day, the feast day of St Richard of Chichester, the patron saint of Sussex. The date marks the anniversary of the removal of St Richard's body from its original burial place in the knave of Chichester cathedral to an elaborate shrine at the Cathedral on 16th June 1276.

The flag of Sussex was registered by The Flag Insitute on 20th May 2011. The flag represents the whole of Sussex and is based on the traditional emblem of Sussex - six gold martlets on a blue field. The emblem was first used by John Speed in 1611 in his book  ' Theatrum Imperii Maganae Britanniae ' as one of the seven Saxon Heptarchies.
