MERCIA COUNTY FLAG - the region of Mercia was one of the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy. The name is a latinisation of the Olde English word Mierce or Myrce meaning 'border people'.

The kingdoms 'capital' was the town of Tamworth, which was the seat of the Mercian kings from around AD584. From AD600 to 900, Mercia dominated England south of the River Humber. This area covered the regions of East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Wessex. This period was known as the Mercian Supremacy. However, by 1016 the region had become part of the kingdom of England after the last Mercian king died in 879.

Tamworth remains the historic capital of Mercia and Tamworth castle continues to fly the Mercia flag every day. The Mercia flag flown from the castle uses a darker shade of blue than that flown by Tamworth itself.
