Gordon Strachan’s boys will be starting their campaign for qualification to the World Cup 2018 on September 4th 2016 with a match against Malta where the Tartan Army are firm favourites to bag a victory and secure their first three points of the campaign. After a disappointing run in the Euro 2016 qualifiers the Scots will be even more determined to secure a spot at the Russia World Cup tournament.

Strachan is yet to name his new captain after Scott Brown stepped down. One favourite is West Brom midfielder Darren Fletcher who took the armband for the matches against Italy and France and led the side on numerous occasions a decade ago. Robert Snodgrass (Hull City) has also expressed an interest in the position.

The two teams have previously met five times – the first in 1988 was a draw – the other four matches were all won by Scotland.
