FLY THE FLAG FOR ST GEORGE'S DAY  - 23RD APRIL 2015

 

St George's day is on 23rd April and is England's national day. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the national flag of England and also part of the Union Jack. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard the Lionheart and brought to England in the 12th century. It was worn by soldiers of the Crusades to avoid confusion in battle.

St George was born in A.D 270 and died on 23rd April A.D 303. He was a roman soldier who who protested against the persecution of Christians and he died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George stems from the time of the Crusades when it is was claimed the Normans saw him in a vision and were more victorious. He never actually visited England.

One of the best-known stories about St George is his slaying of a dragon. Although it is highly unlikely this occurred! he is known thoughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England!

St George is also the patron saint of Scouting and on the Sunday nearest to the 23rd April, scouts and guides in England parade through high streets and attend special St George services at their local church.

St George's Day is NOT a public holiday in England but many people and businesses display the St George flag and bunting to support the national day. There has been growing momentum recently to have St George's Day declared a public holiday. The wearing of a red rose - the national flower of England - is also another St George's Day tradition.
