FLY THE FLAG FOR ST ANDREWS DAY - THE PATRON SAINT OF SCOTLAND 30TH NOVEMBER

The Scottish flag was adopted in the 16th century. According to legend, in 832 A.D. King Oengus (II) (or King Angus) led the Picts and Scots in battle against the Angles, led by a king named Athelstan. King Oengus and his men were surrounded and they prayed for deliverance. During the night Saint Andrew, who had been martyred on a saltaire St Andrews cross, appeared before them and assured Oengus of victory. The following morning a white saltaire appeared against the blue sky background to both sides.  King Oengus and his men took heart from this but the Angles lost confidence and were defeated.  The flag of Scotland has used this design ever since.
