AUSTRALIA DAY IS CELEBRATED ON THE 26TH JANUARY 2015. This day commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is a time for Australians to come together to celebrate their country and culture. The Australian flag was chosen by its people in 1901 in a public design competition following federation. The flag of Australia was first flown on 3rd of September 1901 in Melbourne although it wasn't until 1954 that the Australian flag was recognised by and legally defined in Flag Acts 1953 as the Ausralian National Flag.

The flag of Australia has three elements on a blue background - the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross. The Union Jack in the upper left corner acknowledges the history of British settlement. The Commonwealth Star, which has seven points, represents the Federation of the six Australian States and the Australian terriotries collectively. The Southern Cross reflects Australia's position in the Southern hemisphere.
