The Andorra flag has seen a number of changes over the last 150 years, with its history being a little vague as to the exact design and length of time certain flags were in use.
Andorra was originally part of Catalonia, and as such used the Catalan flag until 1806 when a red and yellow vertical striped flag was used (although this was not an official flag). Later a horizontal tri-colour of red, yellow and blue was used with an image of a crown centrally placed – the date this was used from is not clear, with some sources claiming the flag dates back as far as 1866, whilst others claim the flag was introduced by Boris I (Boris Skossyreff) – although this is highly unlikely as he only reigned as king for 8 days (6th – 13th July 1934) with some sources claiming the flag was still in use after his reign. In 1939 a flag was adopted with a similar crest to the one used today, but with the exception of a motto as seen on the current flag of Andorra.
The Andorra flag used today was adopted on August 27th 1971. It consists of a blue, yellow and red vertical tri-colour with the coat of arms of Andorra emblazoned in the centre. The coat of arms is centuries old, and incorporates the arms of the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix, the two princes of Andorra, as well as the arms of the King of Aragon and the Viscount of Béarn, of whom Andorra was formerly a vassal. Text on the botton of the coat of arms reads ‘Virtus Unita Fortior’ (United virtue is stronger). The colours are taken from the flags of France and Spain (blue and red France, red and yellow Spain).
