After a century of occupation by France, Algeria gained independence in 1962, and adopted the flag of Algeria we see today. The flag is very similar to the one used by the Algerian government in exile (1958–1962) with two main differences – the current flag displays a red crescent and star placed centrally, with equally spaced vertical green and red stripes, whereas on the previous flag, the crescent and star was smaller with the white vertical stripe being much wider than the green.
The red star and crescent on the Algerian flag is a symbol synonymous with Islam which is commonly used on flags of the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe and can be found on the flags of Turkey, Tunisia, Azerbaijan and Malaysia to name just a few. The star and crescent came into prominence during the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, with the symbols used as a metaphor for Ottoman and Persia (rulers of Islamic Empires). The star and crescent were decoratively used by the Ottoman’s in mosques.
The colours of the Algeria flag have the following meanings - green represents nature’s beauty, white stands for peace, and red colour depicts blood of those who were killed fighting for freedom.
