The national flag of Bolivia was adopted on November 5th, 1851. The red symbolises the blood of the national heroes, sacrifice and love. The yellow stands for the mineral resources and for the Incas who were first to make use of them. The green is a symbol of eternal hope, evolution and progress. The arms in the centre display symbols of independence (condor), liberty (sun) and republic (Phrygian cap). The alpaca represents the animal kingdom, Mount Potosi represents the mineral kingdom, and a breadfruit tree represents the vegetable kingdom. The wheatsheaf symbolises agriculture. The ten stars represent the nine departments of Bolivia and the one lost to Chile. Finally, the flags and weapons represent the will to defend the country.
