Merchant Navy Day flags for sale
In the UK, we observe Merchant Navy Day to recognise the impact of merchant seafarers throughout history. This special day allows us to pay tribute to both the past and present sailors, who have dedicated their lives to this profession. On this significant day, we honour the bravery and dedication of those who served in the Merchant Navy. The Flag Shop is very pleased to add our voice in standing behind this extraordinary group, made up of civilian merchant ships that played a crucial role during both times of conflict and peace.
To provide some background information, the term 'Merchant Navy' was given by King George V following WWI as a recognition of their incredible contributions. It is important to note that at that time, Britain's merchant fleet outnumbered all others with 200,000 sailors operating one-third of all registered vessels! The courageous actions of these nameless individuals were often overlooked, despite their bravery in navigating treacherous waters to deliver crucial supplies during both World Wars. Despite facing gunfire and lurking enemy submarines, they remained steadfast in the midst of great challenges. Their unwavering selflessness often went unnoticed in comparison to the more glamorous military feats that garnered attention.
After years of efforts, September 3rd, 2000 was established as the official day to remember members of the Merchant Navy. Annually on this date, people across the UK proudly raise the Red Ensign flag - the recognized emblem of the Merchant Navy - in all regions of the country as a meaningful tribute to those who have bravely served beneath its proud folds throughout history.
Beyond simply recognising their bravery in challenging times, Merchant seafarers have taken on the immense responsibility of delivering over 90% of the UK's imports. Regrettably, a vast number of people remain uninformed about this reality, making it really vital that we highlight their tireless efforts.
