Thom Higgins was the first person to come up with the term ‘Gay Pride’. He was a gay rights activist from 1969 and for many years, wanting to increase the visibility of LGBT people and to validate the different social groups. The 1950s and 1960s were a different time when being gay was not something that you would be open about or that was tolerated. In fact, many people that were religious regarded being gay as a sin. The movement began after a police raid that took place on the Stonewall Inn. This was a gay bar in New York City. In the time that followed there were many protests and riots that took place. In 1969, the first pride march was held.
Brenda Howard was an activist that arranged the first march and the idea of events around Pride Day. Indeed, there are many pride events that take place all over the world every year. While some have been cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, this does not mean that celebrations should be forgotten. Instead, you can make sure that you celebrate Gay Pride in your own way with The Flag Shop flags and bunting. This can help you feel confident and proud, also remembering the events that got the world to where it is now.
There are common symbols that have been become associated with Gay Pride. For example, the rainbow flag, with each colour representing a different social group, including lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. These symbols are popular at all times of the year. But they are particularly popular during June, which has become known a LGBT pride month. Up and down the country, you can attend events with friends and family.
