The flag of Benin was adopted in 1959, replacing the French tri-colour which was flown during the colonial rule of France. At this time, the country was known as the Republic of Dahomey; it was not until 1975 that the Peoples republic of Benin was established. The new regime in charge changed the flag to a plain green design with a red star in the top left corner which was used for the next 15 years until the regime collapse in 1990 (which coincided with the collapse of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989). At this point the old tri-colour flag was reinstated. The flag is a simple design displaying two horizontal yellow and red bands on the fly (right) side and a green vertical band at the hoist (left).
