Northern Ireland is the smaller segment of Ireland, remaining as part of the UK. The red saltire of the Northern Ireland flag is incorporated into the Union Jack, representing Ireland indirectly. As the flag has faced controversy due to unionist and loyalist communities, there have been calls in recent years for a new, neutral flag for Northern Ireland.

Currently, the flag design consists of the Ulster Banner contains a red and white cross design, similar to that of England, topped with the coat of arms of Northern Ireland (a crowned six point star with a red hand in the centre). As well as the Ulster Banner, the Union Jack and the Saint Patrick’s Saltire also represent the country. The Ulster Banner is often flown during St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Northern Ireland, as opposed to the typical orange, white and green tricolour of Ireland which is often associated with the celebrations.
