The Red Dragon flag of Wales was granted official status in1959, although some claim it to be the oldest national flag still in use. The origins of the adoption of the dragon symbol have been lost in history and myth. A plausible theory is that the Romans bought the emblem to Wales during their occupation of Britain in the form of the Draco standards, which consisted of a gaping wolf’s head and mouth formed from cast metal, attached to a body of cloth in the form of a windsock. The green and white stripes were added by the House of Tudor, the Welsh dynasty which held the English Throne from 1485 to 1803. Green and white are also the colours of the leek, another national emblem of Wales.
