Mozambique flags were adopted in 1983. The black, green, and yellow were derived from the flag of the African National Congress, used in South Africa. The red triangle contains the yellow star of Marxism, which bears an open book representing education, a hoe representing peasantry, and an AK-47 rifle representing defence of the land.
