The Liberian flag was adopted in 1847. The eleven stripes symbolise the signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence, red and white symbolising courage and moral excellence. The white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given, above the blue square on the flag of Liberia representing the African mainland.
