Major Robert Anderson raised the flag over Fort Sumter in Charleston harbour on December 26, 1860. This is the 33-star US national flag that flew over Fort Sumter during the Confederate bombardment of 12-14 April 1861. The flag was lowered by the Major on April 14, 1861 when he surrendered the fort, at the outset of the American Civil War.
